- The “A Home of My Own” initiative, a winner of a 2025 Social Value Award, fosters personal autonomy through individualized support and the promotion of sustainable habits
Fundación Moeve’s representative in the Canary Islands, Belén Machado, and Moeve employee Javier Orrillo, the volunteer ambassador for the award-winning project, visited the organization’s headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. They were welcomed by its management and technical teams, led by honorary president and founder Georgette Bugnion and general manager Tania Paredes, who updated them on the activities being carried out as part of the program.
The 25,000-euro grant awarded by Fundación Moeve in the latest edition of the Social Value Awards will enable 25 people with intellectual disabilities in Tenerife to participate in the program throughout 2026, strengthening the support they receive to lead autonomous, dignified lives and participate fully in their communities.
During the visit, Belén Machado highlighted the value of the initiative, which “promotes genuine inclusion by providing each person with individualized support tailored to their particular circumstances. We are all different, and the program’s focus on the specific needs of each participant makes it truly effective in helping them live independently. It is inspiring to see how Fundación Sonsoles Soriano puts people first, walking alongside them, promoting their well-being and autonomy, and helping them build the lives they want for themselves.”
Georgette Bugnion and Tania Paredes of Fundación Sonsoles Soriano thanked Fundación Moeve for the support provided through the Social Value Awards, emphasizing that the funding has enabled them to “strengthen a project that improves the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities by enhancing the support they need to live with increasing independence and participate actively in their communities.” “This award has enabled us to expand the number of people who benefit from the program and incorporate innovative, sustainable elements that encourage environmentally responsible practices and promote independent living in keeping with the values of social inclusion, community participation, and social responsibility,” they added.
The “A Home of My Own” project was launched in January with an individualized assessment of each participant’s needs and goals. Based on these assessments, tailored support plans were developed for each participant and written in an easy-to-read format to facilitate understanding.
Since then, the organization’s technical team has provided ongoing support in participants’ homes, working with them on essential independent-living skills such as organizing and maintaining the home, planning grocery shopping, eating a healthy diet, preparing meal plans, preventing household accidents, and managing day-to-day household tasks.
Throughout 2026, the program will also include activities focusing on personal care, healthy habits, relationships and sexuality education, and greater independence in managing personal health.
Sustainability and inclusion go hand in hand
One of the project’s distinguishing features is its incorporation of environmental sustainability principles through group workshops and individualized training. Participants learn about recycling, waste reduction, water efficiency, and the circular economy and put these habits into practice in their daily lives.
Fundación Sonsoles Soriano is also encouraging participants to take part in community activities related to environmental conservation, such as beach and woodland cleanups and urban gardening initiatives, fostering both social inclusion and environmental responsibility.
About the Social Value Awards
Fundación Moeve launched the Social Value Awards in 2005 to support organizations working with vulnerable groups in the communities where Moeve operates. To date, the awards have supported 80 social projects in the Canary Islands, with a total contribution of 862,000 euros. The next call for applications will open on September 1.
