Fundación Moeve's corporate volunteering initiative promotes the reforestation of Monte de Las Mesas

    • The initiative is part of the environmental outreach and community engagement activities included in the “Renatura Monte de Las Mesas” project
Fundación Moeve recently organized a corporate volunteering initiative at Monte de Las Mesas, where a group of Moeve professionals did their bit to help improve biodiversity in this strategic natural area of Tenerife’s capital.

In addition to planting native species, the event, organized in collaboration with Fundación Santa Cruz Sostenible, focused on an interpretive trail designed to promote knowledge and awareness of the ecological value of this area, in line with Fundación Moeve’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.

This activity is part of a series of awareness-raising and community engagement initiatives aimed at diverse groups within the “Renatura Monte de Las Mesas” project, a renaturalization initiative focused on restoring the thermophile forest found in this natural area. The project is sponsored by Fundación Moeve, the Natural Environment department of Tenerife Island Council, and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council's Fundación Santa Cruz Sostenible, and receives scientific guidance from the University of La Laguna

The project's goal is to make progress on the environmental restoration of this area, which is part of the Anaga Biosphere Reserve. Since the project began in late 2023, several lines of work have been initiated, including a technical study of the area’s potential vegetation conducted by the Department of Botany at the University of La Laguna, which identified which species needed to be included in reforestation efforts and determined the land-use plan.

In addition, an ongoing process is underway to collect seeds from native species within the site itself. They are then cultivated, germinated, and grown at the University’s facilities, where a dedicated greenhouse has been created as part of this project to acclimatize the specimens before they are finally planted. These efforts will be complemented by upcoming extension work on the Santa Cruz municipal nursery to increase the facility’s plant production capacity.

The first planting events, which began recently thanks to favorable rainfall conditions, are complemented by interpretive trails in Monte de Las Mesas designed for all types of groups, helping to bring this area closer to the public and thereby strengthen its long-term protection.

Initiatives like this strengthen Fundación Moeve's commitment to corporate volunteering as a tool for environmental and social transformation and also encourage Moeve's professionals to get actively involved in efforts to preserve the natural heritage of the Canary Islands.
