- New infrastructure will allow for accelerated plant production
- A key action for the environmental restoration of this National Park affected by the 2023 summer fires
This collaboration has been kept up for three years, with this year focusing on improving the capacity and efficiency of the greenhouses, key infrastructure in the production of native flora and the restoration of high mountain ecosystems affected.
The commitment started in the same year as the fires, with the expansion of the exterior nursery, which progressed with the improvement and expansion of the greenhouses, focusing in this last phase on technical improvements aimed at optimizing the germination processes and growth of the plants in an environment marked by harsh high mountain weather conditions.
The actions carried out include the installation of cultivation tables with a hot bed system, the waterproofing of the greenhouse floor, and the incorporation of temperature and humidity sensors, which will allow for more precise control of environmental conditions, especially during the winter months when low temperatures hinder and slow the germination of various species. A rainwater collection system also has been incorporated for irrigation.
During a recent visit to the new greenhouse, the councilor of Environment, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergencies of the Cabildo of Tenerife government, Blanca Pérez, emphasized that "this action demonstrates the Cabildo's firm commitment to the recovery of Teide National Park after the severe fires it suffered. Improving these infrastructures allows us to reinforce the production of native flora under optimal conditions, accelerating ecological restoration processes and ensuring the conservation of a unique natural space for future generations.Collaboration with fundación Moeve allows us to advance more quickly and effectively in the recovery of damaged ecosystems and in the conservation of our biodiversity."
For her part, the head of fundación Moeve in the Canary Islands, Belén Machado, emphasized that "these actions represent a fundamental step in improving production performance for the plants necessary for Teide National Park’s environmental restoration work. For three years we have been investing in actions aimed at rehabilitating the damaged areas, promoting biodiversity conservation in this unique enclave that is so special for the people of Tenerife, and in general for the Canary Islands."
For the Environmental Director of the Island Corporation, Pedro Millan, "the modernization of the greenhouse represents a qualitative leap in Cabildo’s technical capacity to produce native plants under controlled conditions, something that is fundamental in an environment as demanding as the high mountains. Thanks to these improvements, we can respond more effectively to both ordinary conservation needs and those arising from exceptional situations such as forest fires.”
Thanks to this joint effort, both the nursery and the greenhouses have seen reduced plant growth times, reinforcing the objective of increasing the production capacity of native species specimens, such as codesoon, retama, Teide violet, summit jail, and Canary Island cedro, which are fundamental for the National Park’s environmental restoration activities.
The improvement of germination and growth infrastructures allows us to respond to the growing demand for plants derived from both ordinary conservation programs, and the extraordinary needs that arose after the 2023 fire.
The initiative is framed within the Tenerife Biodiversity Strategy 2020-2030 and reinforces the value of public-private collaboration as a key tool for environmental restoration, the fight against climate change, and the conservation of one of the most emblematic natural spaces in the Canary Islands. These actions also reinforce fundación Moeve’s commitment to biodiversity conservation.
